Dear 8th grade parents,
Before you know it, graduation will be here and your children will be going off to high school. Now is the time for them to begin to narrow down their selection of high school and to apply to those in which they are interested. I encourage all 8th graders to go to any open houses and any shadow days that the area high schools may be hosting. On that note, I want to pass along some information from some of our area high schools. St. Augustine Preparatory School is hosting an Open House for 7th and 8th grade boys on November 11, 2016. Registration is at 8 AM and the entrance/scholarship exam is 8:30 AM. Holy Spirit High School is hosting an Open House on October 27th at 6 PM. Holy Spirit also has a “Spartan for a Day” program on November 18th from 8:30-1:00 (registration is required). Our Lady of Mercy Academy is hosting an Open House on November 10th from 9:00-1:00 (reservations are required) OLMA is also hosting a visitation day for 7th and 8th grade girls on October 7th. St. Joseph High School is hosting an Open House on Sunday October 16th from 9am to noon and a visitation day on November 16th from 9am to noon.
For your students going to public schools, there are some things you need to know. If they are going to one of the public schools and are hoping to pursue one of the magnet programs, they will need to apply to a specific magnet program. Admission is not automatically granted. Students residing in the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School are eligible to apply for admission to any district magnet program. Students not living in that area are not eligible to apply. Interested 8th grade students and their parents are encouraged to attend available information sessions. Cedar Creek, Oakrest, and Absegami High Schools are hosting a “Magnet Showcase.” Absegami will host a Homeland Security, Public Safety, Computer Science, and Network Technology Showcase on October 29th. Oakcrest High School will host an Air Force Junior ROTC and Biomedical Science Showcase on October 22nd. Cedar Creek will host an Engineering and Environmental Showcase on October 15th. All of the Showcases will be held from 10:00am – 1:00pm at the respective high schools. Magnet applications open in October and the applications are due by early December. Check the high school websites for information.
If your students are going to their local public school, they do not need to apply. They will, however, be required to meet with a guidance counselor at the high school and select their courses for their 9th grade year. You will need to call the high school and set up an appointment. Usually the public schools do not meet with our students until closer to the end of the school year. They typically do not come to our school; you have to go to the high school.
Last, but not least, ACIT usually hosts an information session in October. I do not have a date just yet. As soon as I hear anything, I will let you know. I encourage all of you and your children to check each high school’s websites for new information regularly. I hope this information proves useful. Good Luck!
